The Season’s Celebration … What is this Really?

Christmas is fast approaching on the horizon, we have skipped through Thanksgiving… irrelevant in Aus and the New Year is on the fast track including the Islamic New Year of Hijri (celebrated only since 622 AD or 615 depending on how you view it) and the Chinese New year or Spring Festival (celebrated since forever) as well as many others drawn from different cultures. So what is this all about and just what is it we all celebrate at this time of year?

Oldies at Large – Christmas CHEER!!!

Chrissy marks the end of the year for me … mainly because by New Years I am over it. The Silly Season is when the pickings on telly become hopeless making it a time when I have come again to realized that it is a good thing that I gave up the telly a while ago.

Oldies at Large – Camping in the Backyard

CampfireFor those new guys to the subscription list … welcome .. luv ya’s. If you read back you will discover that we are prepping for our escape as Grey Nomads in 4 short weeks . In the meantime however Christmas is just 2½ short weeks away and the family is preparing to descend. It is our Baby Boy’s turn to host Christmas and as he happens to live in the Granny Flat now as we have moved into the Grampie Flat (caravan) in prep for our tour about Aus. the family begins to descend on our place tomorrow and preparations are fully in force.

Claiming a Aussie Christmas

Screen Shot 2013-10-27 at 9.21.33 amIt is only 7 weeks until Christmas and Christmas in Aus. is something very different from celebrations throughout the rest of the world. It was very early in my childhood that I noted this difference and it began with the arrival of the Christmas cards. I would wonder at those cards, glorious and inviting pictures of snowflakes and snowmen, frosted Christmas trees and reindeers pulling sleighs all things that I had never seen.

It seemed to me that it promised a world that was fanciful; a fantasy in dreams where magic could happen and things that never were possible could come to pass.
